Already in 1882 Van Gogh knew he had an instinct for color. It would take another 4 years until he dared to step away from dark paintings. Vincent was very happy with his Potato Eaters that portrayed sombre peasants after a hard day’s work, but in 1886 he headed for Paris to be inspired and bring color to his paintings.

Money was spent on rent, food and painting supplies so painting self-portraits would save him some money otherwise spent on models. Dressed like a real Parisian and facing himself in the mirror Van Gogh was ready to add color. A year later he decided to move further South to the Provence to find warm light and bright colors to never return to dark paintings anymore. Change started with bravely choosing direction.

This plaster and wooden Italian frame from a Tuscan abbey is from the first half of the 20th century. It is in good condition and features elaborate baroque style decorations with amazing detail. Its majestic style would have been appreciated in Van Gogh’s Paris.
